Ignite a Climate Chaos conversation with A CLIMERICK: ON A CHRISTMAS TABLE-MAT!

Here’s an idea for using a Christmas Climerick (CLimate Change LIMERICK - see below *). If you want to bring the Climate Change conversation into your Christmas celebrations, this just might do it.

And if you are having a Christmas celebratory meal other than at home, where you could use the TABLEMAT version above, you can access the jpeg file HERE

If you can organise more than one use, then why not laminate copies: they should last at least three outings.

If you simply want to copy the words - here they are

At Christmastide, let’s ALL be clear

as citizens we can help steer

our leaders to stop

all fossil fuel plots!

A gift that will last earth for years.

And if we can press our leaders to take the issue of Climate Chaos seriously, then we will truly have contributed to a lasting gift to our wonderful planet. So let’s go for it!

CLIMERICK: As of Old a Prophetic Voice

As of old, a prophetic voice

goes unheeded by many, through choice;

and with prophets arrested

our leaders attested

Their shocking pro-fossil-fuel ploys.

Mid-October 2023 and Greta Thunberg is arrested for joining a Climate change protest in London.

CLIMERICK: It seems There is No planet B by John Hobbs:

It seems there is no Planet B
To offer new air, land and sea,
So with no Terra Nova
To tide our race over,
It’s cherish or perish, by Gee!

CLIMERICK: Scores of Sciences Signal the Same

Scores of sciences signal the same,

Not one science!

As many proclaim.

Earth NOW needs net zero

Not fossil fuel Neros

Who deny this, with false claims inane.

(It feels possible that expressions such as ‘following the science’ devalue the urgency of a deep climate concern by suggesting there is just one single science implying the danger we are in, whereas a multiplicity of scientific disciplines all point clearly in the same direction – we are at serious risk. Wikipedia’s entry of ‘Climatology’ shows a range of the sciences involved)

CLIMERICK: Try Hard Not to Order More Clothes/ Than You Need...

Try hard not to order more clothes

than you need, for the excess are those

filling landfill and wasting

resources, and making

such clothing boost climate-change growth.

(Fewer than 1% of textiles are recycled or re-used!).

Just Stop Oil invaded Les Mis,

Shame the audience got in a tizz!

‘Do you Hear People sing’

Now calls every regime

You must make climate change urgent biz?

(BBC London reported on 5th October 2023

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Just Stop Oil said four people had locked themselves to the stage at the Sondheim Theatre.

"Valjean steals bread to feed a starving child. How long before we are all forced to steal?" it added. Jean Valjean is the protagonist in Les Miserables.

The post continued: "The fossil fuel show can't go on.)

CLIMERICK: Private Jets

Private jets are an utter disgrace,

They pollute at a hideous pace:

It’s about fourteen times

That of long-haul airlines:

They should be taxed - and paid with good grace!

(Private jets are awful for the climate. It’s time to tax the rich who fly in them

CLIMERICK: An Old Clothes Post Cries Out in Pain

An old clothes post cries out in pain,

‘Please give me a line once again,

So with wind and sun’s aid,

Several watts we can save

And your clothes - lovely freshness will gain.

(Hanging clothes to dry in the Air rather than in a tumble dryer can make a big dent in CO2 emissions (BBC Smart Guide to Climate Change ))
