Climericks, Schools, Colleges and the Election.

St Cuthbert’s Island off Lindisfarne: threatened by rising sea levels

Climericks, Schools, Colleges and the Election.

Here’s an idea which could help give some future adults an opportunity to make their voices heard

   1.    Schools/ colleges encourage pupils/ students either to write their own Climerick     (ClimateLimerick) OR to illustrate one of the many now available on this blogsite.

2.    Schools/ colleges invite all the local candidates into school to see the young peoples’ work.

3.    Local press/ TV and any other media are invited

4.    Students nominated in advance read their Climerick; or their artwork is displayed and the candidates are asked to respond (strict time limit, advised in advance,) how they/ their party react to the questions posed.

5.    A tutor/ teacher critiques the responses while the candidates listen: they are NOT allowed to interrupt

6.    The candidates leave and the student/ pupils debate the responses

7.    A small team of students/ pupils is appointed to follow the candidates’ records in respect of Climate issues. Staff give assistance to the team to protest if promises/ policies are at variance with the Climerick event and media are alerted as appropriate.

Or to wrap that into a Climerick (!)

Could Clim’ricks become useful tools

to test would-be MPs in schools?

Students pen one – or draw

a verse shaped before.

Then the kids probe; Smart-Eco’s or Fools?

CLIMERICK: On An Island, You Get to Know Well

KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

The picture below is of St  Cuthbert’s Islet off the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. It was taken by Pam, my wife in a shot that will no longer be possible in 20years time?...10 years?...7years?...5years? or with icebergs and glaciers all melting at unprecedented rates, could it even be 3 years time?

The Climerick below the picture is being displayed in St Mary’s Church, Lindisfarne - its first public outing - so do please look for it if you’re visiting the island soon

On an Island, you get to know well

the dangers of surges and swells:

so if you love this place,

help make those in power face

we need climate action pell-mell!

CLimerick: Said a Butterfly, I’m quite perplexed

KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

Could this be what the #butterfly in #KingCharles portrait is thinking? (New portrait of The King, unveiled yesterday 15.05.24)

Said a butterfly, ‘I’m quite perplexed

In thinking where I should lay next.

Should I veer ‘t’wards a pole

where it’s slightly more cold

or risk my brood being fried eggs?'

CLIMERICK: Venezuela Has Glaciers No Longer by John Hobbs

KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

Venezuela has glaciers no longer:

Its last, on its way to a donga*.

And as temperatures rise,

So, too, do the tides!

What’s next? Inundation of Tonga?

A Significant Week For #Climericks as a Form of #ClimateAction. Cuthbert’s Island off Lindisfarne.

KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

Cuthbert’s Island - off the South West of

       The Holy Island of Lindisfarne

              Photo: Pam, my wife.

#HolyIsland of #Lindisfarne and a New Chapter.

Pam, my wife, and I have just spent a delightful two weeks on

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just off the Northumbrian coast,

a few miles south of the Scottish/ English border. Lindisfarne is

joined to the mainland by a causeway which at high tides means

the small island is cut off from the mainland: residents, tourists

and pilgrims all have to beware of trying to cross as the tide

 comes in. and that has been the way of life for centuries;

possibly even for millennia.

For those who make Lindisfarne a place of Pilgrimage, because

of it’s history of being the home of St Aidan and St Cuthbert, and

other Celtic saints, a walk across the causeway is a very special

experience. And for those who have the time, there is a further

stage of pilgrimage  to complete their journey. This is to walk, at

low tide, from Lindisfarne itself to the little islet called Cuthbert’s

Island in the South West of the larger island, because,Bede tells

us that  was where the Saint retired to when he wanted to be in

the peace of God’s presence, rather than in communication with

the other members of the 7th century monastery.

Today’s Climerick is about that little islet which has real

significance for today: if sea levels rise, as many scientists

predict, the island will disappear under the waves, not just

at high tide but with the tide level equivalents of low tide. For a

while the grassy top will be able to be visited by boat – but

maybe fairly soon, even that won’t be possible.

How very, very sad that will be. The end of a pilgrim route for

centuries and maybe a place of some other sort of homage for

millennia: and we, the human race, will have wrecked it. Unless

some visionary state leaders are determined to STOP fossil

fuels NOW.

Climericks, well used, could help bring that about through YOU

and YOUR FRIENDS .But right now follow the link to fill in a bit

more of a very special story which is likely to be about to end.

As part of this initiative, Canon Sarah Hills, the Vicar of Holy

Island is going to display a small number of Climericks in the

Church of St Mary. Those Climericks will lead to others and

perhaps begin to build a momentum that will land on the desks

of recalcitrant politicians and fossil fuel company executives.

And here’s a jointly written Climerick between me and John

Hobbs of Vancouver Island about Cuthbert’s Island .

As I gaze on this spiritual place

I am saddened to think we might face

Its coming demise

As deepening seas

Overwhelm Cuthbert's Islet of Grace.

If YOU care about the planet, please follow the links and share this post as far as you possibly can.

CLIMERICK: Where Are The Inventive Brains by Trevor Thorn

KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

Where are the inventive brains

That will help fast fashion to change,

So it finds novel courses

Meaning decreased resources

are lavished on any new range.

(Fast Fashion demands the use of massive quantities of water and results in a high proportion of garments going to landfill without being used or used only once or twice)
