CLIMERICK: CO2 is essential for life

COis essential for life,

So why does it cause so much strife?

Fossil fuels cause excess

Which can sure make a mess

Of humans, the Earth and wildlife.

(Whilst COwith sunlight and water is transformed into living matter through photosynthesis and then leaves Oxygen in its wake, an excess of COacts like a global, uncontrollable greenhouse)

CLIMERICK: A Garment Cries, ‘I’m All Forlorn

STARTING TODAY - A CLIMERICK EVERY DAY THROUGHOUT COP28 - HERE’s TODAY'S

Two versions (the one below, a CLIMERICK)

A garment cries ‘I’m all forlorn’

discarded before I’ve been worn;

bought as a ‘just maybe’,

when received, deemed unshapely,

I’m landfill - not dirty nor torn.

(Shamefully, under 1% of textiles are recycled or re-used!).

CLIMERICK for #COP28: Carbon Capture is NOT the Game Changer

Carbon capture is NOT the game changer

That Earth needs to get out of danger.

Watch! Gas and oil clans

hope to derail all plans

to stop drillings. But STOP’s Earth’s sustainer.

CLIMERICK: Said A Glacier ‘This Warming’s Not Nice’. by John Hobbs

Pixabay image - glacier fracture

Said a glacier “This warming’s not nice,

“And it comes at a terrible price:

“While the wildfires do kindle,

“My kind and I dwindle

”Soon you will be be fresh out of ice!”

(Switzerland's glaciers have lost a further 4% of their volume this year - the second biggest loss ever - after last year's record melt of 6%.

The statistics come in the annual report of the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (Glamos), whose team of researchers have been monitoring 176 of Switzerland's 1,400 glaciers for years. BBC Science report 29.09.23)

“Al-Gore-Rhythm” by John Hobbs

A most “Inconvenient Truth”!

While our treatment of Earth is uncouth,

The fruits of neglect

And the climate we’ve wrecked

Are things that we’ll leave to its youth!

CLIMERICK: If You’re Reading This During Your Teens,

If you’re reading this during your teens,

tell MPs you want policies green;

so there’ll be some real hope

that the planet will cope,

and the weather turn far less extreme.

.

(This is an invitation - no, a plea, to concerned teenagers to make MPs aware they will soon be or already are voter(s).

Let Climericks Be a New Tool

Let Climericks be a new tool,

To challenge deniers and fools

Who say ‘Climate’s not changed’

Could it be they’re deranged?

Let these verses tell truth - that’s so cool!

CLIMERICK: The Environment Mess We’ll Bequeath by John Hobbs

The environment mess we’ll bequeath,

In return for a funeral wreath,

Shows little of merit

For our kids to inherit,

It’s more like a kick in the teeth!

CLIMERICK: Deniers are just dinosaurs

Deniers are just dinosaurs

For fossil fuels are a lost cause

bringing weather extreme

Causing deaths - how obscene

When renewables are a safe course.

(The death toll rises with every extreme weather event - yet there are still thousands who are so blind they won’t see the link with  human induced climate change - dinosaurs!)

Ignite a Climate Chaos conversation with A CLIMERICK: ON A CHRISTMAS TABLE-MAT!

Here’s an idea for using a Christmas Climerick (CLimate Change LIMERICK - see below *). If you want to bring the Climate Change conversation into your Christmas celebrations, this just might do it.

And if you are having a Christmas celebratory meal other than at home, where you could use the TABLEMAT version above, you can access the jpeg file HERE

If you can organise more than one use, then why not laminate copies: they should last at least three outings.

If you simply want to copy the words - here they are

At Christmastide, let’s ALL be clear

as citizens we can help steer

our leaders to stop

all fossil fuel plots!

A gift that will last earth for years.

And if we can press our leaders to take the issue of Climate Chaos seriously, then we will truly have contributed to a lasting gift to our wonderful planet. So let’s go for it!

CLIMERICK: As of Old a Prophetic Voice

As of old, a prophetic voice

goes unheeded by many, through choice;

and with prophets arrested

our leaders attested

Their shocking pro-fossil-fuel ploys.

CLIMERICK: It seems There is No planet B by John Hobbs:

So with no Terra Nova

It’s cherish or perish, by Gee!

CLIMERICK: Scores of Sciences Signal the Same

Scores of sciences signal the same,

Not one science!

As many proclaim.

Earth NOW needs net zero

Not fossil fuel Neros

Who deny this, with false claims inane.

(It feels possible that expressions such as ‘following the science’ devalue the urgency of a deep climate concern by suggesting there is just one single science implying the danger we are in, whereas a multiplicity of scientific disciplines all point clearly in the same direction – we are at serious risk. Wikipedia’s entry of ‘Climatology’ shows a range of the sciences involved)

CLIMERICK: Try Hard Not to Order More Clothes/ Than You Need...

Try hard not to order more clothes

than you need, for the excess are those

filling landfill and wasting

resources, and making

such clothing boost climate-change growth.

Just Stop Oil invaded Les Mis,

Shame the audience got in a tizz!

‘Do you Hear People sing’

Now calls every regime

You must make climate change urgent biz?

(BBC London reported on 5th October 2023

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Just Stop Oil said four people had locked themselves to the stage at the Sondheim Theatre.

"Valjean steals bread to feed a starving child. How long before we are all forced to steal?" it added. Jean Valjean is the protagonist in Les Miserables.

The post continued: "The fossil fuel show can't go on.)

CLIMERICK: Private Jets

Private jets are an utter disgrace,

They pollute at a hideous pace:

It’s about fourteen times

That of long-haul airlines:

They should be taxed - and paid with good grace!

CLIMERICK: When Young People Take Countries to Court. BRAVO!

When young people take countries to court,

They must have spent long hours in thought,

As to how they might drive

Politicians to strive

For a safe world that’s not climate-fraught.

(BBC reports on 28.09.23 six young Portuguese people have filed a lawsuit against 32 governments, including all EU member states, the UK, Norway, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey. They accuse the countries of insufficient action over climate change and failing to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions enough to hit the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5C.)

CLIMERICK: The Equinor Bosses Wear Smirks

The Equinor bosses wear smirks

as they plan with Ithaca, works

that will NOT keep us safe

in the energy stakes

but endanger all Earth for their perks.

(On 27th September 2023 it was announced that drilling would commence at the Rosebank site, North West of Shetland, which is jointly owned by Norwegian Energy giant Equinor and British Energy company Ithaca. It is claimed that this will enhance the energy security of the UK but it is claimed by protestors that much if not all of any production will be sold elsewhere and the companies will avoid huge windfall taxation as well. It would appear that the public are once more being lied to by Fossil fuel companies and their advocates)

CLIMERICK: Unbelievably Short-sighted leadership

Unbelievably Short-sighted leadership

A PM who offers oil stakes

the hope of all nations:

what a short-sighted viewpoint to take?

Find the thinking behind CLIMERICKS HERE

I have sent this CLIMERICK to the UK Prime Minister in the following letter. YOU could do the same to register any apprehensions you may have.

The Rt Hon R Sunak

Prime Minister

10 Downing Street,

London SW1A 2AA

Sir,

As a citizen of this country, resident in South Cambridgeshire, I wish to express my deep concern about your recent action in granting Licences for new extractions of oil and gas, by way of sending you this CLIMERICK (CLImate Concern LiMERICK) entitled ‘Short-sighted Leadership’.

A PM who offers oil stakes

shows disdain for all of the sakes

of the next generations,

the hope of all nations:

what a short-sighted viewpoint to take?

Whilst composing the CLIMERICK, I found myself wondering whether you have explained, with honesty, the impact of what you have done to your daughters, and what the likely outcome will be for them and their generation. Have you? I would like to know.

I would also like to commend that you might consider revoking those licences and move to stop the commencement of drilling in the Rosebank field. I understand that drilling will NOT improve the UK’s energy security.

For your information, I have sent a different CLIMERICK to our MP Lucy Fraser, also to register my disgust at the issuing of fossil fuel licences, and implicit abandonment of any green agenda by you and your party.

Yours faithfully,
