CLIMERICK:It’s a Nonsense that ‘Wealth trickles down’ by Trevor Thorn

 KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

St Cuthbert’s Island, off Lindisfarne, Northumbria.
An islet under threat from rising sea levels. The islet
has been adopted by Eco-Verses as
a symbol of the global risk to low-lying places.

This Climerick lies at the heart of the issues that face the world as it heads towards more and more challenges to curb climate change

It’s a nonsense that ‘Wealth trickles down’.

That’s a mantra we need to disown:

for wealth ever sticks

in the hands of the rich

who want more and more wealth of their own.

It HAS to be said!

With elections a near world-wide theme

It’s the long-view that needs to be seen.

Fossil fuels MUST be dumped

and these words widely trump’ed

‘ALL power needs converting to green!'

A bumblebee searching for pollen

buzzed angrily 'Z-z-z-zodem’:

on every side

there’s nicotinide.

For us bees, a life and death problem.

CLIMERICK: Schools of Seals That Bask on The Sand by Trevor Thorn

 KEEPING CLIMATE CONCERN

St Cuthbert’s Island, off Lindisfarne, Northumbria.
An islet under threat from rising sea levels. The islet
has been adopted by Eco-Verses as
a symbol of the global risk to low-lying places.

I’m back to the Island of Lindisfarne for today’s Climerick. After the nursery time of year for the colonies of seals further out in the North Sea and when the tide is low, groups seals congregate on the sandbanks between Lindisfarne and the mainland of Northumbria. Whilst St Cuthbert’s island is vulnerable to rising sea levels, those sandbanks are, by definition, even more threatened. Today’s Climerick looks to a bleak future for the sandbanks - and possibly for the seals too.

Schools of seals that bask on the sand,

sing songs we can’t understand

if ice-melt heightens tides

those sands will subside.

midst laments for once song-crested strands.

The Islet Cries Out For Its Life

The islet cries out for its life,

Pilgrim, see that I’m on a knife-

Edge of existence,

Less massive resistance

To fossil fuels grows to be rife

A Climerick for Sunak - You Claim To Have Policies Bold:

You claim to have policies bold:

They make many people go cold

With their absence of green,

For the young, they’re obscene

As they mean they might not grow old.

On Monday 13th May 2024, Sunak argued his ‘bold ideas’ can create a more secure future for Britons (Source BBC politics reporting). These claims persist as we in the UK near Election Day

Should really prevent us from sleep

For its corporates don’t care

They’re a total nightmare

With throw-aways piled high and steep.

There once were some people on earth
Who mined and created a dearth
Of coal, oil and gas
Increasing CO2's mass
It is not a matter for mirth

Big banks are complicit in this
They hope that their customers miss
The way they invest
That is not for the best
But ignorance here is not bliss

'The Letter’: A film showing an outworking of 'Laudato Si’ The Pope’s Leadership Encyclical on Climate Change & CLIMERICK

We were meeting with a local group of  members of The Iona Community, a dispersed community of people concerned about Justice and Peace issues. One of the group recommended that we should watch 'The Letter' which is a You Tube Original looking at the issues of Climate change through the lens of five representatives of groups of people profoundly affected by the changes which are already happening. For anyone sharing these concerns this is well worth the hour and a half it takes to watch - and I thought it appropriate on this website to frame this invitation in a Climerick!

If you want our sick world to get better,

Take an hour or so watching The Letter.

It’s there on You Tube

And it’s written for YOU,

From The Pope: a true Eco-trendsetter.

.

If you’re part of the great band of cleaners

who sometimes feel you are ‘not-seeners’,

this is time to break-out

and raise up a shout,

‘Clear the mess that’s been made by ‘No-Greeners’’.

How to do that’s not easy to know,

so, while you are out on the go,

place a climerick where

lots of people might stare

which says ‘Turn off the dirty fuel flow.’

Today's modern households have seen a

Old-style lemon and salt

might help call a halt

to pollution - and be a bit greener.
